blockade runners and the Confederacy.

Enjoy the hospitality that welcomed William Makepeace Thackeray and General Robert E. Lee. Experience the stately beauty of well-proportioned rooms decorated with elaborate plaster cornices and carved woodwork. Imagine family and guests descending from elegant carriages to enter the charming front garden. Its original 1850’s design is one of the few remaining period gardens in the city.

Andrew Low engaged New York architect John Norris to design and construct his house in 1848-49. Commissioned to design the Custom House on Bay Street, Norris remained in Savannah to build many desirable residences with, the latest in technology and luxury. Norris’ mixture of restraint and opulent detail created an elegant Neo-classical villa where Low and his family lived through birth and death, joy and sorrow.

The house remained in the family until the death of Andrew Low’s daughter-in-law. Juliette Gordon Low, Founder, Girl Scouts of the USA. The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the State of Georgia purchased the house from her heirs in 1928 and opened it to the public in 1950. Here they have preserved one of the South’s finest collections of period furnishings related to the history of Savannah and the low family.
